Military Pension Based on Mixed Service in Ukraine

Today, military personnel and members of other services responsible for Ukraine’s national security play an exceptionally important role in protecting the country’s sovereignty and statehood.

This article concerns military personnel who may be entitled to a pension based on a combination of military service and civilian employment, commonly referred to as a pension based on mixed service. Let us consider what this means.

Mixed service means that a person has periods of military service prescribed by law combined with other periods of official employment that are taken into account for pension purposes.

Under Ukrainian legislation, a military service pension for years of service may be granted regardless of the person’s age if the statutory length of qualifying military or equivalent service has been acquired. In particular, persons who have accumulated at least 25 calendar years of qualifying service may, subject to the other statutory requirements, become entitled to a pension for years of service regardless of age. But what happens when a person combines military service with civilian employment?

Ukrainian legislation also provides for the possibility of obtaining a pension based on mixed service. Subject to the statutory grounds for discharge and other requirements established by law, such a pension may be available to a person who has reached the age of 45 at the time of discharge and has at least 25 calendar years of total insurance record, of which at least 12 calendar years and 6 months consist of military service or service in other bodies specified by law.

Therefore, the principal requirements include:

– reaching the age of 45;

– having at least 25 calendar years of total insurance record, including at least 12 calendar years and 6 months of military or other qualifying service;

– meeting the statutory requirements concerning the grounds and circumstances of discharge from military or equivalent service.

In practice, many future pensioners experience difficulties when applying for this type of pension because the procedure requires the collection and proper submission of documents confirming both military service and other periods of employment. Our pension lawyers can analyse the complete set of documents, determine whether a person meets the statutory requirements for a mixed-service pension and provide comprehensive legal assistance throughout the pension application process. You will only need to provide the documents required for the assessment of your pension entitlement. Do not delay protecting your pension rights – the correct calculation and confirmation of your service may have a significant impact on your future pension.
