How to apply for a pension in Ukraine? This is probably one of the most common questions among people approaching retirement age. Pension registration is an important issue because the correct submission of documents directly affects whether a pension will be granted and from what date pension payments will begin.
The process of applying for a pension in Ukraine usually begins with collecting the necessary documents. The exact list may vary depending on the type of pension and the applicant’s employment history.
What documents are required to apply for a pension in Ukraine?
1. Passport or ID card.
2. Tax identification number.
3. Marriage certificate or another document confirming a change of surname, if applicable.
4. Employment record book.
5. Diploma or other documents confirming full-time education for periods that may be included in the insurance record under applicable legislation.
6. Military ID or other documents confirming military service, if applicable.
7. Salary certificate for any 60 consecutive calendar months before 1 July 2000, if the applicant wishes to submit such information and the conditions established by law are met.
8. Bank account details if the pension is to be paid into a bank account.
Depending on the type of pension and the applicant’s individual circumstances, the Pension Fund of Ukraine may require additional documents confirming insurance record, preferential employment, disability, special status or other circumstances relevant to pension entitlement.
After collecting the necessary documents, the next question is: how and where can you apply for a pension in Ukraine?
One option is to apply personally to a service centre of the Pension Fund of Ukraine. The applicant submits the necessary documents and an application for the relevant type of pension. The documents are processed and entered into the Pension Fund’s electronic system.
Another option is to apply for a pension online through the electronic services portal of the Pension Fund of Ukraine. This makes it possible to submit an application and electronic copies of the required documents remotely without personally visiting a Pension Fund office.
After receiving the application and all necessary documents, the Pension Fund reviews whether the applicant meets the statutory requirements for the relevant pension. If the requirements are satisfied, the pension is granted. If the Pension Fund refuses to grant the pension, the applicant receives a decision stating the reasons for the refusal.
It is particularly important to check your insurance record before applying for a pension. Information about employment periods after 1 January 2004 is generally available in the register of insured persons. Employment periods before that date may need to be confirmed by an employment record book, archival certificates or other documents provided for by law.
If the Pension Fund refuses to include certain employment periods in the insurance record, does not recognise preferential service or refuses to grant a pension for another reason, such a decision may be challenged in accordance with the procedure established by Ukrainian law.
